When it comes to being green, well, I'm still spring green but I want to be evergreen green. To most of my friends and family I drank the cool-aid long time ago and I'm now "one of those people".
But I am a work I'm progress, and that is OK. A wise person once said "the moment we cease to learn and to grow, we die". What a wonderful phrase to live by.
So although I have taken quite dramatic changes in my lifestyle in order to live a nontoxic, eco-friendly and sustainable life, I still have a lot more I want to accomplish. Here are some of the goals I want to accomplish this year.
1. Learn to make my own bath soaps.
I already make my own laundry detergent, and have cut out all toxic household cleaning products as well as beauty products, but I have been intimidated by soap making. No more! Patchouli-goat milk soap anyone?
2. Home made healthy snacks.
Slowly but surely, I have been learning how to eat real food, and we are doing OK meal wise. But I want to get better are baking and making my own snacks, and I don't mean using a Betty Croker cake mix, I have been attempting some Paleo baking and home made Larabars but I want to expand my repertoire and be consistent at it in order to always have a healthy alternative at home and for on the go.
3. Learn more about gardening.
One good thing and bad thing about me is before that I decide to do anything I feel the need to have a great deal of knowledge on the matter. I'm not a "just wing it" kind of girl. Unfortunately that has kept me from attempting certain things in my life because I feel like I don't know enough about it to attempt it. Gardening is one. My mother's grandparents and great grand parents were farmers, my mother's mother even though grew up in the city with a small yard, always had her own vegetable garden, and fruit trees, and chickens...how hard can growing tomatoes can be!?4. Learn more about natural medicine.
I'm just fascinated with the concept of self sustainable living, and with the idea that for most all ailments, mother nature has a cure. I want to learn more about herbs, and essential oils and the actual properties of foods. Once again the nerd in me, I don't just want to learn that certain foods are good, I want to learn the chemical composition of such foods and the biochemical process our bodies go through when in taking such food!5. Learn to sew and get crafty.
Basically, I want to be the eco-friendly version of Martha Stewart! My grandmother was a seamstress--a wedding gown maker, talk about talent! My own mother is good with the sewing machine and can make anything from simple mending to creating roman curtains. As part of my desire to become self sustainable, this is one area where I really need to master.
I'm really looking forward to revising these goals at the end of the year to see how much I've accomplished. Up next I'll give you 5 easy steps you can take to make your home and life style greener and healthier on 2013!
