What is this obsession women have about preventing stretch marks or trying to erase existing ones? I’m not going to lie, it’s what’s on my mind now that I am pregnant. Even though through all my research I came to the conclusion that there isn’t much one can do to prevent them except for gaining a healthy weigh during pregnancy and trying to avoid rapid weight gain.

I did find that as the skin on the belly stretches it can cause a lot of discomfort such as dry skin and itchiness, and keeping the skin well hydrated through salves, creams, or oils can alleviate these issues and this might prevent stretch marks.

But, I have been learning more and more about essential oils lately and I know many have some great healing properties, and some actually are scar erasers.

I had made this belly butter initially, but I found that I was really suffering from very dry skin, more so than usual, during this pregnancy that I decided I needed more. Plus, a couple of friends requested I come up with something to help existing stretch marks. So I set out to find something just for that.

Best Blooming Belly Oils

:: Tamanu Oil

This is my favorite new oil. It is considered a dry oil, meaning it is easily absorbed by the skin without leaving a greasy residue, and it smells wonderful. This oil is seriously the bomb diggity. Yeah, I said that, and I just aged myself. Anyway, Mountain Rose Herbs has this to say about it:

“Tamanu oil has been thoroughly researched, and the conclusive evidence on its ability to heal damaged skin is overwhelming. Its benefits are notable for scarring, stretch marks, minor cuts and abrasions, rashes, sores, and much more”

:: Calendula and Chamomile infused oils

For this I used a blend of equal rations of jojoba oil and sweet almond oil infused in dry calendula and chamomile petals. Both of these oils are great for all types of skins and these herbs are well know for their soothing and calming properties. You can read this for instructions of how to infuse oils.

:: Geranium Essential Oil

This powerful essential is one of the go to essential oils by experts to heal wounds and scars. According to Mountain Rose Herbs this essential oil is anti-inflammatory and cicatrizant.

:: Neroli Essential Oil

This is another cicatrizant essential oil widely used by aromatherapists, it is said that neroli helps regenerate skin cells as well, which is the reason it works so well for existing stretch marks.

:: Frankincense Essential oil

By far the most used and widely known essential oil as a “scar eraser” it is also great for aging skin. See my recipe for a nourishing face serum for dry and mature skin here.

Important: A word about essential oils

Safety above all. It is very important to dilute essential oils properly, so please stick to the recipe as it has been written if you are pregnant or nursing. If you are using this to erase existing stretch marks and are not pregnant you can double the amount of drops listed.

Scientific names do matter, when buying essential oils please make sure it is the latin name mentioned aboveespecially if you are pregnant.
